David Henrie & Kevin James Get Serious in LITTLE BOY

    http://media.booeep.com/26162_image_582_preview_medium/1312888562

"Wizards of Waverly Place" star David Henrie and Kevin James (Zookeeper) usually make us laugh but it sounds like they'll be making us cry soon in the family drama Little Boy. The movie is about an 8-year old (played by newcomer Jakob Salvati) with developmental issues whose only friend is his dad (James). When his dad has to leave to fight in World War II, the boy has to deal with vicious teasing and bullying from his classmates. Emily Watkins and Ben Chaplin, both of whom starred in The Water Horse, have also signed on for starring roles.

The film is set in "small-town America" but is being shot in Baja California and locations in Mexico. Toronto Film Festival prize winner Alejandro Monteverde is directing.

    David Henrie's New Movie

Today on the show, we've got the latest details on David Henrie's next project. He's set to act in a war dramedy about a young boy whose dream is to bring back his dad from World War II. Of course, this movie takes place back in the day -- during that WWII era -- and don't assume that David will be playing that kid. That kid is reportedly a 8 year old who's only friend is his father, hence, why the character wants him back so badly... especially as his fellow students treat him so poorly. Bringing it back to David.

David Henrie chats about writing his second 'Wizards of Waverly Place' episode

"Wizards of Waverly Place" star David Henrie was recently given another shot at writing an episode for the series, after writing his first in 2010. Now, with his episode "Meet The Werewolves" set to air on June 17 on the Disney Channel, the multi-talented actor tells OnTheRedCarpet.com correspondent Chris Balish about his writing process, career aspirations and his philanthropy.

"It's my second episode for the show. It's a blessing, creatively to get to do this. It's something that I've always wanted to do. Here's my second at bat at it," Henrie told Balish on the set of the popular series, which co-stars Selena Gomez.

On the show, Henrie and Gomez play siblings in the Italian-Mexian Russo family who are wizards in training living in Manhattan. The fourth season of the series, which will be Gomez's last, airs its finale on June 24.

The actor says he learned a lot from his first time writing, which made his second effort go a little smoother. "When you write something it's from your mind so you get so attached to it and for reasons being time cuts or when things aren't working, you gotta be willing to cut things," he said. "So it was much easier this time and it's all for the better good of the script."

"I would love to write more and continue to write for the show. To get to do it on a professional level and have it on 'Wizards' -- it was absolutely amazing," he added.

So what does he love so much about the writing process? Henrie says, "I just love being in the room, the rewriting process, getting to pitch jokes, break the stories with them, all of that." The actor adds, "It's really a family here and it's really a team effort. So to get to be a part of that process behind the curtain it was great."

The 21-year-old, who has made appearances on "How I Met Your Mother" and "That's So Raven," says he doesn't want to stop at writing, "I would love to direct, that would be so much fun. We've all been doing it so long that we definitely know the process."

"I think if you can control your future and sort of lay the bricks of your own foundation then that's the best way to go," he added. "I want to control my own future. The people I admire are the Apatows out there, the Sandlers, you know Vince Vaughn's whole company. They sort of do their own thing."

To find out more about Henrie's episode of "Wizards of Waverly Place" and his philanthropic work with the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education in Miami, check out the video above.

    David Henrie find his ‘Place’

    David Henrie
David Henrie, from Disney Channel’s Wizards of Waverly Place, and Drake Bell, of Nickelodeon’s Drake & Josh fame, are here to have fun for a serious cause: quality early education. In other words, they’re not too cool for school.

Henrie and Bell will headline the United Way Rocks for Education party from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the UM’s BankUnited Center to benefit the United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education. Expect performances by local dance teams, appearances by local celebrities, VIP meet and greets, contests and more.

We caught up with Henrie, 21, before the trip:

What made you decide to get involved?

There are so many great charities out there, but I thought this really hit problems on the nose. It’s important to take preventative measures to provide a solid education to kids at an early age, so it gives them something to build on and helps them avoid problems in the future.

When you do events like this, how crazy does it get?

It’s kind of mind blowing how many people know me from Wizards. I had a vague idea by seeing how well other Disney shows had done but didn’t realize it would get this big. In L.A. everyone’s cool; I have my spots I go to, but anytime I go out of town it’s kind of hard.

The show is ending after four seasons. What can we expect?

The episode that I wrote called “Meet the Werewolves” comes out in June so that’s exciting. Werewolves don’t like wizards so drama ensues. Parents also get turned into kids so they’re Tweeting and Facebooking, which is amusing.

    What are you doing next?

I just shot a pilot for CBS called The Assistants about a group of Hollywood assistants working for an insecure, slightly psychotic celebrity played by Heather Locklear. I’m the fresh-faced kid trying to pursue his dreams of being a filmmaker. It’s written by Tucker Cawley, who did Everybody Loves Raymond, so it’s really funny.

    Could you relate?

When I first came to L.A. I was very much the wide-eyed fish out of water. Any kind of character that I play has to be a part of myself. Ideally, I’d like to do filmmaking, every aspect of it. If my vision will tell the story properly I’m all for it.

    Madeleine Marr

Event tickets are $15 for general admission, $25 for floor seats, and $50 VIP, which includes prime seats and a backstage meet and greet with Henrie and friends. For tickets, ticketmaster.com.
