In 2002, writer/director Peter Murietta created a sitcom called “Greetings from Tucson,” starring a Mexican-American cast. Although the show didn’t last long, Murietta again brought his personal experience to “Wizards of Waverly Place” featuring Anglo and Hispanic characters.
Although the show was created by Todd Greenwald (a producer on “Hannah Montana”), Murietta made significant changes when he signed on to the show. It went from a white family to a mixed family, and the brother and sister became more hostile to one another. “Those are things very much in my universe,” says Murietta.
The writer put a little bit of himself into both teen characters. David Henrie’s ‘Justin’ became the overachieving side of himself, and younger sister ‘Alex’ (Selena Gomez) “is the part of me that went to college for five-and-a-half years and never graduated.”
